Celebrate World Refugee Sunday
June 21, 2009
It's a time to learn more, to pray for the world's 14 million refugees and to speak up on behalf of refugees wherever we can.
We are thankful that just 8 miles south on Randall Rd from FBCG dozens of refugee families from war-torn countries have been safely settled in Aurora by World Relief (WR) and are building new lives. How fun and interesting it is to meet these "New Americans" and become friends! Oh, how it changes and enriches our lives to get to know them and learn of their cultures, taste new foods and share about how things are in America and in their countries.. Refugees have come from Bosnia, Afghanistan, Iraq, Bhutan, Vietnam, and the Chin, Karen, and Karenni ethnic groups from Burma. From Africa we have families from Sudan, Rwanda, Burundi, Somalia, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Congo and Democratic Republic of Congo, Togo and Eritrea. All refugees are screened and brought here in cooperation with the UN, the US Government and the partnering relief agency- in our case, World Relief. Refugees are completely legal and ready and eager to work.
