Rick is the son of FBCG missionaries Bubs and Bobbie Borman ( with Wycliffe Bible Translators) and grew up in Ecuador. In the 1990s, he and Sue worked as youth pastors in Michigan and took the group on various mission trips to ecuador. During one of these trips, they were asked by International Teams to consider coming to Ecuador to begin a camp/retreat center with an emphasis on using outdoor adventure in reaching people for Christ. After pray and asking God's guidance in this, they applied to the mission in 1998 and arrived on the field in January 1999.
In December 1999, property was purchased in the mountains of Ecuador for the camp and retreat center, and "El Refugio" (The Refuge) opened for reaching people fo rChrist. Little by little, facilities and programs were developed, more staff came to help and more and more people were impact through the ministry at El Refugio.
Today, El Refugio hosts over 1,000 people per year that go through adventure-type programs with the purpose of reaching them with the message of Jesus Christ.
Currently, the Bormans live in Michigan and serve in recruitment of staff, partnership development and supervision of mission trips to aid in the work in Ecuador.
